Washing trousers | How to wash smart trousers

Washing or ironing your trousers requires considerable caution or costs you quite a few trips to the dry cleaner. The delicate fabric used for trousers or suits can quickly get damaged or shrink. But... it's not always necessary to take your trousers to the dry cleaner. Reading the wash label and following our tips will get you a long way, so you can wash your trousers yourself.

Washing or dry cleaning trousers

Washing or dry cleaning trousers is often done at a dry cleaner's, especially if the trousers are made of linen or wool. The crease of trousers can also be easily pressed at a dry cleaner's.

Whether you take your trousers to the dry cleaner for convenience or because you hate ironing a suit, nowadays you can easily wash and iron your trousers at home.

Washing trousers with a washing machine

Chances are you have a washing machine at home with all sorts of special programs. Maybe you don't even use 9 out of 10 programs. But it does make washing your trousers easier. Here's how to wash smart trousers with a washing machine:

  1. Read the wash label on the trousers
To avoid damaging your trousers, it is important to read the wash label carefully. Water too hot? Your trousers will come out much smaller. Durable polyester and cotton can be washed in the washing machine.
  2. Wash trousers inside out
To prevent fading and protect the buttons, it's advisable to turn the trousers inside out.
  3. Use a laundry bag
A laundry bag provides extra protection for the fabric's fibres. Put your trousers in it before placing them in the washing machine.
  4. Cold water and delicate cycle
It's best to wash trousers in the washing machine with a cold program (30 degrees), such as a delicate or wool wash program. Spinning is not necessary. If your washing machine does set this, use a maximum of 400 rpm.
  5. Liquid detergent
A mild and liquid detergent is best suited for washing your trousers. Do not use excessive detergent or washing powder. This can leave stains.

Grandma's tip: It's best to wash new trousers with natural vinegar instead of detergent. This helps the colour of the trousers last longer. One cup is enough!

Washing trousers by hand

Do you want to wash your wool trousers yourself but don't dare use the washing machine? Then you can also choose to wash them by hand. Here's how to wash smart trousers by hand:

  1. Bucket with water and mild detergent
Fill a bucket, sink, or bathtub with cold water and add a mild detergent. Stir the water until it foams.
  2. Submerge your trousers in water
Add the trousers to the mixture and submerge them completely. Gently rub the stains out of your trousers with your fingers.
  3. Rinse with water
Drain the soapy water and refill with cold water. Continuously submerge the trousers until all the detergent has been rinsed out.

Grease stain on trousers

A stain on your trousers is easily made. You can easily remove stains from your trousers yourself. All you need is water, salt, and a cleaner. Which cleaner to use depends on the fabric of the trousers. Here's how to remove a stain from your trousers:

  1. Soak the stain with water (not too cold, and definitely not warmer than 30 degrees).
  2. Sprinkle salt on the stain and let it soak for fifteen minutes.
  3. Rinse off the salt.
  4. Apply a cleaner to the inside of the trousers (at the level of the stain) and let it soak for an hour. Check the fabric on the wash label for the correct cleaner:
    • Cotton trousers: vinegar
    • Viscose or polyester trousers: laundry or dish soap
    • Wool trousers: wool detergent
    • Silk trousers: vegetable glycerin
  5. Then place a sheet of paper towel on the stain.
  6. After an hour, rinse the residue from the trousers with water.

Maintaining your trousers is important if you want to look neat. A good fit of your trousers is just as important. Here's how to wear men's trousers!

Drying trousers

It's important not to leave your trousers in the washing machine for too long after washing. An absolute no-go is putting your trousers in the dryer. The heat in the dryer can also damage the fabric fibres.

You should dry your trousers by hanging them up immediately after washing. Use a hanger with trouser clips and hang your smart trousers up for quick drying time and as few wrinkles as possible in the fabric.

Ironing trousers

Ironing your suit trousers can be an annoying chore, especially if they are pleated. So it's important to hang your trousers to dry as soon as possible after washing. The steam function on most irons also makes it a bit easier.

You can iron trousers at a low temperature. Not a fan of ironing? Let the steam from the iron glide along the trousers while they hang on a hanger.

Ironing trousers with a crease

You can iron trousers with a crease in several ways. Do the trousers have pockets? Turn the trousers inside out and iron the pockets at a low temperature. Then turn the trousers right side out again and iron them.

Do your trousers have belt loops? Then fold the first left loop onto the first right loop and then iron the trousers. This easily creates the crease in your trousers.

Do your trousers have no loops? Then make a crease in the trouser leg by placing the inner seams on top of each other. Then steam along the seams with the iron.

Hang the trousers up after ironing. Always hang pleated trousers along the crease.

Ironing trousers without an iron

If you don't have an iron at hand and still want to iron your trousers? Then there are a few hacks to get the wrinkles out of your trousers.

  1. Shower and hang your trousers in the bathroom. The steam will do its job.
  2. Use a hairdryer.
  3. Roll up your clothes to prevent wrinkles. Handy when you need to travel!

Always read the label when washing trousers

If you're going to wash your trousers yourself, we emphasize once again that you should carefully check the wash label. Pay attention to the fabric and the symbols indicated on the label. If you don't dare? Always take your trousers to a dry cleaner.
